What is a Stunt Stand?

Every sport has certain types of helpful apparatus that aid in the training of its athletes, competitive cheer is no different. An example in track and field is if you have ever happened to see a sprinter running with a parachute on their back. This seemingly simple exercise helps with resistance training with the idea being that if you can push through having the parachute holding you back, when the parachute is not there (either released in mid-run or after the exercise has been completed), you will be able to gradually build up your sprinting acumen as the resistance training momentum compounds over time. In a like manner, there is a device called a ‘stunt stand’ that aids flyers in perfecting stunting techniques. Depending on the program that an athlete is involved in, there may be stunt stands located at their practice facility. Obviously, a stunt stand can be purchased (fairly simply online) for practice away from the gym as well. A stunt stand is something that can be helpful for athletes of all ages and skill levels, whether you are a flyer that is just starting out or the most experienced flyer on a Worlds team. A stunt stand was something that was specifically designed to help flyers in perfecting all the skills they would need to throw in any stunt one can imagine, with the idea of doing so prior to being in a LIVE stunt. Specifically, stunt stands can help in the critical repetition that is necessary to help in fine-tuning skills in advance of stunting with others. There are a number of stunt stand variations on the market, but all are designed to help flyers learn how to balance and throw their skills in a much more realistic position than while simply pulling their skills on flat ground. Pricing for brand new stunt stands can vary, but even the most elaborately designed ones retail for less than $500. Clearly one can get their hands on a stunt stand for much less than that however. You may or may not be surprised to learn that we have seen very viable stunt stands made out of wood by some creatively handy parents! After you have secured the use of a stunt stand, it is important to learn how to get the most out of training in conjunction with one. The easiest way to do this is to conduct an online search of, literally, “How to use a stunt stand”. When doing this, a number of videos will pop up that exhibit several different exercises which can be done while utilizing a stunt stand. Our suggestion would be to watch as many of these videos as you can so that you can get a diverse sense of the differing suggested training methodologies used when working with a stunt stand. As with anything else, the more you work in training with a stunt stand, the more you will benefit from it. After all, having a stunt stand and not using it is like the sprinter having a parachute and not using it with their resistance training. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. Stunt stands can be an extraordinarily helpful piece of equipment in aiding with your flyer drills, but only if you actually use them and use them correctly.
