What Is UP With These Cheer Ducks?!?

At a recent Spirit Fest competition in Providence, RI, our gym acquired what can only be described as the Mother of All Cheer Ducks as a gift for two teams that won their divisions (this thing is HUGE!). It definitely turned heads and got people talking – even well after the event was over!

If you’ve been to an All Star cheer competition lately, you’ve probably noticed smaller “ducks” popping up all over the place. They seem to be everywhere – on bags, at seating areas, and being passed around between athletes.

So, what exactly are Cheer Ducks, and why are they suddenly such a big deal?

Cheer Ducks are small, fun items that athletes, families, and fans bring to competitions (or can usually buy when they are there) to give away, trade, or share with others.

They are meant to spread positivity and add an extra layer of excitement to what can already be a long and high-energy day.

At first, these were mostly classic rubber ducks. They were easy to find, inexpensive, and simple to carry around.

Over time, though, the idea has grown into something much bigger and more creative.

Now, Cheer Ducks can be all kinds of things.

Some are still rubber ducks, but others are plush ducks, crocheted ducks, or even duck-themed keychains.

Many are decorated with bows, glitter, or team colors.

Some athletes even attach them to “Positive Pins,” which are decorated clothespins used to surprise and encourage other athletes by clipping them onto bags or uniforms.

What makes Cheer Ducks special is not just what they are, but what they represent.

Cheer competitions can be intense.

Teams work for months preparing routines, and a lot of focus is placed on scores and placements.

While that competitive side is important, Cheer Ducks help balance things out by bringing a sense of fun and connection into the environment.

Giving someone a Cheer Duck is a simple gesture, but it can go a long way.

It might spark a conversation between athletes from different gyms or help someone feel noticed and included. It’s a small act that can brighten someone’s day, especially during a long competition.

Social media has also played a big role in making Cheer Ducks popular.

Athletes often share photos and videos of their ducks, showing off unique designs and creative ideas.

This has inspired more teams to get involved and put their own spin on the trend.

Another reason Cheer Ducks have taken off is because they allow athletes to express their creativity.

Teams have ducks that reflect their personality, theme, or team spirit (like our LARGE Purple Duck!).

Some go all out with decorations, while others keep it simple.

There’s no right or wrong way to do it, which makes it fun for everyone.

Cheer Ducks are about connection, creativity, and kindness.

Whether it’s a HUMONGOUS duck given as a special award or a small, decorated item shared between athletes, the meaning stays the same.

Cheer Ducks remind everyone that, beyond the scores and rankings, cheer is also about community – and sometimes, it’s the little (…or BIG PURPLE DUCK!) things that people remember the most.
