Balancing school with cheer practice and cheer-related responsibilities can be tricky, but with some smart strategies, you can manage both successfully. Here’s a guide to help you stay on top of your schoolwork while also being a terrific athlete!

1. Make a Schedule

Start by creating a schedule that includes all your activities. Write down your school hours, cheer & tumble practice times, and any cheer-related events like special functions or competitions. Don’t forget to include time for homework and studying. A weekly planner can help you see what needs to be done and when. If you’re tech-savvy, you can use a calendar app on your phone to set reminders for important tasks. Color-coding different activities can make your schedule easy to read and help you keep track of everything.

2. Prioritize Your Tasks

With so much going on, it’s important to prioritize your tasks. Figure out what needs to be done first. If you have a test coming up and a cheer practice, focus on studying for the test before practice. Make a to-do list and rank your tasks by importance and deadlines. This way, you’ll ensure that your schoolwork is done on time and that you’re prepared for your cheer responsibilities. Sometimes, you might have to sacrifice a little free time to get everything done, but planning ahead makes it easier.

3. Stay Organized

Being organized is key to balancing school and cheer. Keep your school supplies in order and your cheer gear in one place. This way, you won’t waste time looking for things when you need them. Use folders or binders to keep your school papers in order, and make sure your cheer uniforms, sneakers, etc. are ready to go before practices and competitions. Staying organized also means knowing when assignments are due and when you have cheer events. Mark these dates on your calendar so nothing sneaks up on you.

4. Use Downtime Wisely

You might have some downtime during the day, perhaps waiting for the bus or before cheer practice starts. Use this time to review your notes, do some reading, or start on your homework. Even a few minutes here and there can add up and help you stay ahead on your schoolwork. By using these small chunks of time effectively, you’ll have less to do when you get home.

5. Communicate with Teachers and Coaches

Let your teachers and coaches know about your busy schedule. If you have a big competition coming up, tell your teachers ahead of time – particularly if it involves travel! – so there is a plan in place for working through any pending assignments. If you’re struggling to balance everything, don’t hesitate to talk to your coach. They might be able to help provide some tips on managing everything. Most adults understand how busy students are and will try to help you out.

6. Take Care of Your Health

Your health is important, both for school and cheer. Make sure you’re eating well, getting enough sleep, and staying hydrated. Cheerleading is physically demanding, so you need to take care of your body to perform well. Also, don’t forget to take breaks and relax. Your mind needs rest just as much as your body does. Spending time with friends, listening to music, or just chilling out can help you recharge.

7. Learn to Say No

Sometimes, you’ll have to say no to extra activities or social events. It’s okay to turn down invitations if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Your friends will understand if you can’t hang out every time they ask. Focus on what’s most important: your schoolwork and cheer responsibilities. It’s better to do a few things well than to do too many things and feel stressed out.

8. Ask for Help When Needed

If you’re struggling, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Talk to a teacher, coach, or parent if you need advice or assistance. Whether it’s help with homework, cheer routines, or managing your time, getting support can make a big difference. You don’t have to handle everything on your own.

By following these tips, you can balance school and cheer practice effectively. It might take some effort, but with planning and determination, you can succeed in both.
