How Does Weather Affect Cheer Practice?

Almost everywhere that someone may live, at one point or another there are weather events of some type that affect their area.

This could be anything from a dusting of snow to a torrential rainfall to you name it!

But whatever challenge that the weather may present, what comes along with it are the different types of activities that may be influenced by this weather.

Cheer practice is a PERFECT example.

In the Northeast as an example, in certain months of the year we are constantly looking over our shoulder for the next impending snow event and are often working to dodge them like the famous movie scene with Keanu Reeves dodging bullets in The Matrix.

Almost no matter where you live in the country, you can most likely relate to some version of this.

While we are all certainly empathetic to the challenges that weather may present, we also realize the reality that it is super important that every effort is made to make sure that cheer practice is able to happen and is as well attended as possible.

Attending cheer practice, even when it’s snowing (as an example), is important for several reasons.

Consistent practice helps the entire team improve and stay prepared for performances or competitions. Cheerleading is a team sport, and every member plays an important role. Missing practice can create gaps in routines, stunts, or formations, making it harder for the team to perform well. Everyone relies on each other, so being present shows commitment and respect for your teammates.

Practicing in different conditions builds resilience and adaptability. Life doesn’t stop because of bad weather, and neither do many activities. By showing up to practice, even when it’s cold or snowy, you develop a strong work ethic. This mindset can help you in other areas of life, like school, future jobs, and personal goals. It also shows your coaches and teammates that you’re dedicated, which can boost team morale and unity.

Cheerleading involves stunts, jumps, and precise timing. If someone misses practice, they may fall behind on learning new routine components or perfecting routines themselves. This can increase the risk of injury during a performance. Regular attendance ensures everyone is on the same page and can execute routines safely and confidently.

Cheer practice during inclement weather also provides an opportunity to stay active and focused. Winter is definitely a period of the year when people feel less motivated due to the cold and shorter days. Going to practice keeps you physically fit, helps you stay connected with friends, and gives you a fun way to stay engaged, even when the weather isn’t ideal.

Attending practice teaches discipline and responsibility. In life, you won’t always feel like showing up, but being consistent is what leads to success. If you commit to cheerleading, it’s important to follow through, regardless of the weather. This commitment not only helps you grow as a cheerleader but also as a person.

Of course, safety is the priority when traveling in and through bad weather. If conditions are really dangerous, you will most likely receive guidance from your program for the best approach on that given day. However, if it’s safe to attend, showing up to cheer practice demonstrates your dedication, helps your team succeed, and helps you to continue to build skills that will benefit you in all areas of life.
