Where Do Cheer Coaches Come From?

Cheer coaches come from many different backgrounds, but they all have a strong love for cheerleading and working with athletes.

All Star Cheerleading is a competitive sport where teams perform high-energy routines with stunts, tumbling, jumps, and dance. Coaches play an important role in helping their teams learn skills, stay safe, and compete at a high level.

Many cheer coaches were cheerleaders themselves. Some started in town or school cheerleading or on All Star teams when they were young. As they got older, they kept learning and growing in the sport. Some of them competed at the highest levels and even won national championships. After they finished cheering, they wanted to stay involved, so they became coaches. These coaches bring a lot of experience to the gym. They know what it feels like to be on the mat and how to help athletes prepare for competition.

Other coaches come from different sports backgrounds, like gymnastics or dance. These sports have similar skills to cheerleading, such as tumbling, flexibility, and rhythm. Gymnastics coaches, for example, are great at teaching flips and handsprings, which are important parts of a cheer routine. Dance coaches can help teams with tumbling, timing, movements, and stage presence. Even though they may not have cheered before, they can become great All Star cheer coaches if they learn the sport and care about their athletes.

To become a cheer coach, many people take classes and earn certifications. The U.S. All Star Federation (USASF) is the main organization for All Star Cheerleading. It offers safety training and coaching courses. These help coaches learn how to teach skills the right way and keep athletes from getting hurt. USASF also teaches rules for competitions, spotting techniques, and how to manage a team. With USASF, coaches can go through testing and renew training every few years. This helps make sure they stay up to date and keep learning new things.

Some cheer coaches have also even gone to college to study things like sports science, physical education, or coaching. This helps them understand how the body works, how to train athletes, and how to plan safe and effective practices. While not all cheer coaches have a college degree, many choose to keep learning in different ways.

Coaches often start by helping in a gym or being an assistant coach. They work under more experienced coaches to learn how to teach skills, give feedback, and lead a team. Over time, they may become head coaches and run their own teams. It takes time, patience, and a lot of hard work to become a great coach.

Cheer coaches need more than simply skill and knowledge—they also need to be good leaders. They must encourage their athletes, solve problems, and create a positive team environment. Coaches spend a lot of time helping athletes set goals, stay motivated, and work through challenges. They also talk with parents, plan practices, and travel with the team to competitions.

Cheer coaches come from many different places: former cheerleaders, gymnasts, dancers, and people who just love coaching. Although this is certainly quite varied, the ultimate idea is the same – they care about their athletes and want to help them grow and succeed. Being a cheer coach is a big job, but for the people who love it, it’s one of the most rewarding things they can do!
