As with many youth sports these days, cheer season can often feel like a vicious circle where there does not seem to be a defined beginning or an end.

Like the famous Energizer Bunny, it feels as though it keeps going, and going, and going, and going…

Particularly in regard to All Star Cheer, if you been involved in the sport even for a relatively short period of time, you will definitely get the sense that this is a serious thing!

There is a tremendous amount of dedication involved on the athlete side, the family side, and the gym side.

With the grueling nature of the season, especially during ‘Comp Season’, it is clearly important that we support our athletes as best as possible as the balance between school, cheer, and other life/family obligations can certainly be strenuous.

Supporting your athlete during competition season is in fact crucial for their success and well-being.

Here are some ideas on the best ways to do so:

Attend Competitions: Show up to your athlete’s competitions whenever possible. Your presence in the audience can provide them with a sense of comfort and motivation. Cheer loudly and proudly to boost their confidence.

Provide Emotional Support: Competition season can be stressful for athletes. Offer emotional support by listening to their concerns, providing encouragement, and offering words of affirmation. Remind them that you’re proud of their hard work regardless of the outcome.

Help with Logistics: Assist your athlete with logistical support, such as transportation to and from competitions, packing necessary gear and snacks, and ensuring they have everything they need for a successful day.

Stay Informed: Familiarize yourself with the competition schedule, rules, and guidelines. This will allow you to better understand the sport of competitive cheer and provide appropriate support.

Encourage Healthy Habits: Promote healthy habits during competition season, including proper nutrition, hydration, and rest. Help your athlete maintain a balanced lifestyle to optimize their performance and recovery.

Celebrate Achievements: Celebrate both big and small achievements throughout the season. Whether it’s mastering a new skill or achieving something that they never have before, acknowledge your athlete’s progress and hard work.

Be a Positive Role Model: Lead by example by demonstrating good sportsmanship and positivity. Avoid putting undue pressure on your athlete and focus on their effort rather than just the outcome.

Respect Boundaries: Understand your athlete’s boundaries and preferences. Some athletes may prefer space before competitions, while others may appreciate your constant presence and encouragement.

Provide Feedback Wisely: Offer constructive feedback and encouragement in a supportive manner. Avoid being overly critical or negative, as this can undermine your athlete’s confidence.

Support Team Unity: Foster a sense of camaraderie and team spirit by supporting not only your athlete but also their teammates. Cheer for the entire team and encourage positive interactions among teammates and coaches.

By following these ideas, you can provide effective support to your athletes during competition season, helping them thrive both on and off the mat!
